Apart from their natural home in Europe, Chamois are found only in the alpine regions of New Zealand.
These mountain antelopes are a heavily sought after and worthwhile trophy. Frequenting some of the steepest terrain in the region, high fitness levels and a head for heights are required.
Chamois can be hunted year round, but typically are sought after for their heavy winter skins.
The rut usually occurs during the months of May and June. Sometimes their inquisitive nature can be their downfall. It is not uncommon for them to ‘come in’ for a better look when they can’t positively identify what they are looking at.
9-inch Chamois are considered the benchmark in terms of horn length, but a slightly smaller buck with think bases and strong hooks makes for a very attractive trophy indeed!
